Are Dental Implants Painful?

Are Dental Implants Painful?

Dental implants are a long-term and cost-effective solution to the problem of missing or damaged teeth and give you a healthy, natural-looking smile. A dental implant is a titanium screw that is inserted into the bone of the jaw and is used to support one or more false teeth. You can even replace all of your natural teeth with dental implants. They are the best option for many patients and can last as long as your natural teeth if you look after them properly.

A question that our patients at Simply Smiles dental practice often ask is whether having dental implants is a painful process. A post made from titanium, a material compatible with the body, is set in the jawbone so that it can eventually fuse with the bone and an abutment or connector is then placed on top. This supports a replacement tooth or group of teeth that are custom-made to match your natural teeth as closely as possible. It may sound a little daunting, but the procedure usually takes place with a local anaesthetic and should be somewhat less painful than having a tooth extracted. If your case is more complicated than normal your dentist may give you a mild sedative, but general anaesthetics are rarely used for implants. As with many dental procedures, you may feel some discomfort for a week to ten days. You may experience some swelling and bruising and these symptoms can be relieved with over-the-counter analgesics such as Tylenol. To minimise the level of pain and discomfort that a patient experiences when having dental implants it is essential to choose a dentist who has an exceptional level of training and experience.

Dr. Kira Gekht of Simply Smiles Dental in Sarasota, Florida is a highly-trained dentist with all the education, skill and clinical expertise needed to carry out safe and successful dental implantation with minimal pain and discomfort for the patient.
