Inlays and Onlays

Why Might I Need an Inlay or Onlay?

We will suggest an inlay or onlay if you have a back tooth with moderate decay or damage but which doesn’t need a crown. Inlays and onlays are used to repair the chewing surfaces of back teeth where using a normal filling material wouldn’t be strong enough to withstand the pressures of chewing. By using an inlay or onlay, we can restore strength and structure to a tooth, preventing any further damage or infection while repairing the tooth so it looks very natural.

Simply Smiles can provide beautiful inlays and onlays made from a variety of different materials, depending on your preferences and requirements. Our porcelain restorations will blend in beautifully and are extremely hard wearing. We can also provide restorations made from tooth colored composite resin while some people will prefer the look of gold.

What Is the Difference between an Inlay and an Onlay?

An inlay is designed to repair the central chewing surface of a back tooth while an onlay is able to repair a slightly larger area which involves one or more of the cusps and where the decay or damage is more extensive. The tooth cusps are the raised points of the tooth on the edges closest to your cheeks and your tongue.

What Are the Benefits of Choosing an Inlay or Onlay?

The benefits include:

  • These restorations can be made from tooth colored materials that will blend in, repairing a tooth nearly invisibly
  • The materials used to make an inlay or onlay are extremely stable and do not expand or contract when in contact with hot or cold
  • Each inlay or onlay is custom-made to precision fit the cavity, sealing out bacteria
  • Inlays and onlays are extremely durable and will last longer than conventional fillings
  • Our dentist, Dr. Kira Gekht, will only need to remove any damaged tooth structure when preparing your tooth for an inlay or onlay, preserving the maximum amount of healthy tooth

What Is the Procedure for Having an Inlay or Onlay?

You will need a couple of visits to Simply Smiles. The first appointment is so Dr. Gekht can prepare your tooth, before taking an impression which is used by our dental laboratory to fabricate the permanent inlay or onlay. At this point we will fit a temporary restoration to protect your tooth until your next visit. During your second visit, we will try in your new inlay or onlay to check the fit is absolutely perfect before bonding it permanently in place.

Inlays and onlays may not be suitable for everyone and sometimes we might suggest covering up a tooth completely with a crown to offer greater protection to a badly damaged tooth.
