Dental Emergencies

Dental pain can be completely miserable and this is why we make every effort to see patients in pain or discomfort on the same day. If you do have any kind of dental emergency and would like to see our dentist, please contact us at 941-921-4654 during office hours. We’ll do our very best to fit you in that day and we can also offer advice over the phone on how to deal with your symptoms until you can get to see us.

In the meantime, over-the-counter pain relief can be useful, as can an ice pack to help relieve any swelling or facial pain around the affected tooth. It’s best not to use heat as this can make things worse.

Dealing with Out Of Hours Dental Emergencies

We know dental emergencies have a habit of flaring up at the worst possible time, often during the night or over the weekend. If this happens and you are one of our regular patients, please call our office number as there will be recorded instructions on how to reach a dentist.

What Qualifies As Being a Dental Emergency?

You should seek urgent dental treatment if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Severe toothache or facial pain which isn’t helped by taking over-the-counter painkillers
  • If you knock out or dislodge a permanent tooth
  • If your toothache is causing a fever or facial swelling which could indicate infection
  • Uncontrolled bleeding following a dental implant, extraction or other oral surgery
  • If you have an accident or trauma which affects your teeth or jaws

Reducing Your Risk of Dental Emergencies

While it’s often impossible to prevent dental accidents, visiting a dentist regularly can reduce your chances of a dental emergency such as an infected tooth. It also makes sense to keep a small dental first-aid kit at home containing over-the-counter painkillers and an antiseptic mouthwash. Temporary dental cement (available in any drugstore) will help hold a loose crown in place until it can be permanently cemented back in place.

If you do feel that your dental problem is an emergency then please contact us and will endeavor to make sure any problem is attended to as quickly as possible. Initial treatment can be given to relieve pain and discomfort about it’s likely you will need to return to our dental office at a later date for more restorative work on the affected tooth.
