Many methods have been developed to replace missing teeth, but the most advanced and permanent solution today are dental implants. A tooth implant is attached directly to the jawbone, just like a real tooth, so that it replaces your original tooth in its entirety.
How Dental Implants are Done
First we will need to examine your jawbone and gum tissue to ensure that the implant can attach properly. In some rare cases, a bone or gum tissue graft is necessary to provide a reliable foundation. When we are sure that the jawbone is strong enough, we will refer you to a an implant specialist to insert a small screw that will act as the “root” of the synthetic tooth. The jawbone and gum tissue will actually grow around and into this small screw, fusing with it permanently.
After the tissue has sufficiently healed, Dr. Gekht can attach an abutment or post to the screw. The final step to to place a crown over the abutment.
The Implant Crown
The crown acts as a replacement tooth, so it must be custom-fabricated to ensure proper fit and appearance. Our dental labs will create the synthetic tooth using a mold made from your own mouth, so that the size and shape of the implant crown will complement the surrounding teeth. The ceramic material will also be chosen to match your tooth color closely.
The result will be a strong, attractive replacement tooth that will function and appear like a natural tooth. With proper care, your implant can last a lifetime.
