Tips For Brushing Your Teeth

Tips For Brushing Your Teeth

Brushing your teeth regularly is the most important part of your oral hygiene routine. It not only keeps your teeth pearly white and your breath sweet-smelling, but is also the best way to prevent gum disease and tooth decay. Our top brushing tips will help you keep your smile bright, white and healthy:

Toothpaste
A toothpaste with fluoride will strengthen tooth enamel and help to prevent decay. Toothpaste with whitening ingredients can be too abrasive and may damage your teeth. Ask your dentist for advice if you are not sure which one is the best for you. Whichever you choose, you only need to use a pea-sized blob.

Choosing a Toothbrush
Make sure that your toothbrush is not too big – it should fit comfortably in your mouth without causing any discomfort. As for the bristles, never go harder than a medium grade as hard bristles can easily cause damage to gums. Whether you choose a traditional manual toothbrush or an electric one is a matter of personal preference.

Take Your Time
You should aim to brush your teeth for two minutes, three times a day. This may sound like a lot of brushing and many of us fail to meet this target. Try mentally dividing your mouth into 4 sections and brush for 30 seconds each. Some electric toothbrushes come with a timer.

Brush Up Your Technique
Be gentle. If you are inclined to be heavy-handed, using an electric toothbrush will help to prevent you from brushing too hard, as the brush does all the work for you. Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle and brush in circles. Brush the front of your teeth, especially around the gum line, then pay attention to the back. Brush back and forth across the chewing surfaces. Finally, brush your tongue to remove the bacteria that can cause bad breath. Rinse with water.

Don’t Clean Too Often
Cleaning three times a day is ideal. More than this will risk making your gums sore. Acidic foods can soften tooth enamel so after eating wait for 30 minutes before brushing.

While brushing is very important for dental health, your teeth should also be examined regularly by a dentist. To book an appointment, call Dr. Kira Gekht at Simply Smiles, Sarasota, Florida at 941-921-4654
