What Are Dental Veneers

Dental veneers are a great choice for anybody who wants to improve the shape, color or appearance of teeth. A dental veneer is a very thin layer of porcelain which is fitted to the front surface of a tooth, in much the same way as a false fingernail is fitted. Dental veneers can be fitted if you want to hide chipped, worn or broken teeth or lighten discolored teeth. If braces are not a suitable option for closing small gaps in teeth, dental veneers can be fixed instead.

About Dental Veneers

Veneers may also be called dental porcelain laminates or porcelain veneers, and each individual veneer consists of a wafer thin shell of porcelain which is matched to the color of surrounding teeth, to ensure it has a natural appearance. Veneers may also be fabricated from composite materials, however, porcelain gives better stain resistance and has greater light reflecting ability. Dental veneers are bonded to the front surface of teeth using strong adhesive.

Preparing Teeth for Dental Veneers

You’ll need to make at least two visits to the dentist when you’re having dental veneers fitted. At your first visit your tooth will be prepared for the veneer, which involves removing a fraction of the outer enamel surface of the tooth and color matching your teeth, so the veneer has just the right shade and tone. You may need local anesthetic while your tooth is buffed to remove this upper layer of tooth enamel, however it’s not always necessary. When your tooth has been prepared for the veneer, an impression or model will be made of your tooth. This is sent on to the dental laboratory so they can fabricate your veneer. This may take a week or two, so your dentist could fit a temporary veneer over the prepared tooth, if you’re worried about the appearance of your teeth during this interim period of time.

Fitting Dental Veneers

When your veneer is ready for fitting, your dentist will place it on the tooth temporarily to make a visual examination of the size, color and fit of your new veneer. It may be necessary to trim the veneer down before fitting it permanently in place. Your tooth will then be cleaned, polished and etched and the veneer is then cemented into place.
