Dental Exams at Simply Smiles

Hi, my name is Chloe. I'm one of the dental assistants here at Simply Smiles. We get a lot of questions about what is involved in a dental exam, and I'm here to answer your questions.

Why are dental exams and cleanings essential?

Dental exams are essential because they allow the dentist to detect any cavities and other outstanding oral health issues like gum disease or even cancer. It's important to come in and get checked out before problems become serious.

What is included in a dental exam?

In a dental exam, we will do a series of X-rays to check all your teeth for any cavities or recession. The exam involves the images from the X-ray, and the doctor will also look visually to see if there are any abnormalities not seen in the X-rays.

What is a dentist looking for during a dental exam?

During a dental exam, a dentist is looking for any tooth decay, signs of recession in the gums or the surrounding tissues of the mouth. We're also looking for any jaw problems or anything that may concern you. It doesn't always have to be health-related; it could be cosmetic. Some people want to change their smile. It's important to evaluate all areas that are important to the patient and the dentist.

What types of treatment might come from a dental exam?

After a patient has a dental exam and the doctor makes their diagnosis, the doctor will advise the patient to get fillings if they have cavities. If a cavity becomes too large, the doctor may prescribe a crown instead. Sometimes we encounter cases where the patient may need a bridge if they have missing teeth, or to replace missing teeth, we can do implants. The doctor will also diagnose what type of cleaning the patient may need after the gum evaluation is done. Other treatments that may follow a dental exam include whitening or a full mouth restoration. We also offer clear aligners to help bring the teeth back into alignment.

How long does a full dental exam take?

A dental exam is usually pretty quick. First, you do the X-rays, then the doctor comes in and does the exam. Once the doctor makes a diagnosis, we let you know what's going on. It usually takes about 30 minutes or so.

Are dental exams painful?

They can be sometimes, especially if it's been a long time since your last dental exam. The doctor is looking visually and checking your gums, which might be a little uncomfortable. However, the patient's comfort comes first. We provide as many breaks as needed, and the exam is completed to ensure proper care and diagnosis.
