Understanding Single Tooth Implants
Hi, my name is Dr.Kira Gekht, and I'm a dentist here in Sarasota, Florida, at Simply Smiles. I'm here to answer some questions regarding single tooth implants.
What is a single tooth implant and how does it differ from other types of tooth replacements?
The single tooth implant is definitely different from other treatments because what we really wanted to do is replace the missing tooth in the most conservative way, where we're not touching the adjacent teeth. But I want to show you something else. Here's what happens when you don't replace the tooth. When a tooth is lost over time, the teeth on either side and the tooth above are going to start to move in. And now we're having problems with all of these teeth. In actuality, you're not just losing one tooth; potentially, you're losing at least three. This is why it's important to replace the missing tooth. I want to make sure that I'm going to address it first.
Can you explain the full tooth implant process from consultation to placement?
Let me go over very briefly the process of full tooth replacement. Number one, the diagnosis is important because we need to determine how long it's been since the tooth was lost, and that's going to affect how we're going to treat it.
At our office, Simply Smiles, we have the latest technology to ensure that our diagnosis is accurate and effective. We use a CT scan to verify that we have the bone to place the implant, and we also have an internal scanner to help with the diagnosis and future treatment. You know, oftentimes nowadays with 3D printing and technology, I might elect to use what we call guided surgery. Guided surgery is now used all the time. I just had a patient who told me he just had a computer-guided knee replacement. How amazing is that?
In dentistry, we always want to be at the forefront of technology. So, patients come in, and we use all our diagnostic tools first, ensuring that the patient is a good candidate for the implant. Patients come back, we place the implant, and then unfortunately, we have to wait because nature has to take its time to ensure it really accepts the implant, and the bone around it is nice and solid. Then, in about four to six months, we can go back in and make you a new tooth.
What does the tooth implant procedure typically involve and how long does it take?
The actual procedure for one tooth usually takes no more than an hour. We want to ensure that the patient is comfortable. We numb the area, place the implant, and then, as I mentioned before, we're going to wait.
What is a bone graft for a tooth implant and when is it necessary?
Sometimes we have to add an additional bone because some patients have lost bone structure due to either infection or a tooth that's been lost for a long time. To place the dental implant, we need to ensure there's enough support system. Think of it as putting a screw in a wall. Sometimes you can put it in, depending on the quality of the wall. I know I'm simplifying it, but it's probably the easiest way for me to explain it. If I have a hardwood, I can just basically take the screw and screw it in, and it's going to be solid. In fact, I could probably hang the heaviest picture on it right away. But sometimes if it's drywall, you have to reinforce it. The same principles apply to the bone. If the bone is soft, then we need to reinforce it.
How does a single tooth implant compare to a bridge or denture for tooth replacement?
A single tooth implant, in my opinion, is the best way to replace missing teeth. It has multiple advantages. We can place a single tooth implant without touching the tooth adjacent to it. That would basically be a bridge.
What should patients expect in terms of healing after receiving an implant tooth?
Patients should have reasonable expectations regarding healing. It should not be more uncomfortable than having a tooth extraction. In fact, oftentimes, patients report to me that following the implant placement, they are a lot more comfortable than even after having the tooth removed.
What are the benefits of dental implants for a single tooth replacement?
Single tooth replacement using dental implants has amazing benefits. First and foremost, here is a very important statistic: Patients who keep their teeth or replace their teeth on average live 7 to 10 years longer. I'm not even going to mention the quality of life because being able to chew well, eat well, and enjoy the food we love, such as steak, greens, and salads, is important. When you have missing teeth, it gets difficult. That's why it's important to replace the tooth.
How much does a single tooth implant cost without insurance?
The cost of a single tooth implant varies. It depends on the complexity of the procedure. It could be as little as $4,000 and can go up to $6,000 or more.
Are there significant differences between the cost of a single tooth implant and other options?
Very often, patients ask if there are significant differences in the cost of replacing a missing tooth with a dental implant versus doing a bridge because that's usually the two types of treatments we're comparing. The upfront cost of a single implant procedure is going to be a little more expensive than the bridge, but in the long run, I think it will benefit patients the most because we're replacing literally one-to-one. The teeth are separate, and you're able to clean them well because you'll be able to floss and use all your oral hygiene devices to keep it clean.
Bridges are great and sometimes are absolutely necessary, and I do them a lot, but they do have some drawbacks, such as not being able to floss in between. However, there are other things we can do to help with your oral hygiene. If I were given a choice between a single tooth dental implant versus having a bridge for myself or my family, I would always choose the dental implant.
