Exams & Cleanings

Exams & Cleanings in Sarasota

A regular exam and cleaning is the simplest way to keep your teeth and gums healthy. We look closely, clean thoroughly and explain what we find in plain language.

Exams & Cleanings

What It Is

A dental exam is a careful look at your whole mouth. We start with X-rays, then your dentist checks each tooth, your existing fillings and your gums. The exam also includes an oral cancer screening of your tongue, cheeks, lips and gums. Most exams take about 30 minutes, and you can ask for a break whenever you need one.

A cleaning is done by one of our hygienists. It removes the plaque, hardened tartar and surface stains that brushing at home leaves behind. If we find signs of gum disease, we will explain why a deeper cleaning below the gumline may serve you better than a routine one.

Exams and cleanings are usually booked together, so one visit covers both. Your dentist will also ask about anything that bothers you, including how your smile looks. You leave knowing where your oral health stands and what, if anything, needs attention next.

Who It Is For

  • It has been six months or longer since your last dental visit.
  • You are new to Sarasota and need a dental home.
  • Your gums bleed when you brush or floss.
  • You notice stains, buildup or bad breath that will not go away.
  • You have older fillings or crowns that should be checked.
  • You want a baseline before cosmetic or restorative treatment.

Benefits

  • Problems found early. Small cavities and early gum changes are simpler to treat than advanced ones.
  • A cleaner, fresher mouth. A professional cleaning removes tartar and stains that a toothbrush cannot.
  • Oral cancer screening included. Your dentist checks the soft tissues of your mouth at every checkup.
  • Existing dental work checked. We look at older fillings for cracks or leaks before they cause trouble.
  • Clear answers. We show you what we see and talk through your options without pressure.

How It Works

What to expect, step by step.

  1. X-rays. We take the images your dentist needs to see between teeth and below the gumline.
  2. Exam. Your dentist checks each tooth, your gums, your bite and the soft tissues of your mouth, and listens to any concerns you have.
  3. Cleaning. Your hygienist removes plaque, tartar and stains, then polishes your teeth.
  4. Your plan. We review what we found, answer questions and recommend when to come back.

Cost and Insurance

New patients can start with our $130 new patient special. It includes an exam, full-mouth X-rays and a cleaning, in the absence of periodontal disease. If your gums need a deeper cleaning, we will explain the difference and the fee before any treatment begins.

Most dental plans cover preventive visits, though benefits vary by plan. We file claims with all PPO insurance and are in network with Delta Dental Premier. If you need further treatment, financing is available through CareCredit, Cherry, Wisetack and Proceed Finance.

For my first interaction with the staff at Simply Smiles on the phone to my first visit. Everyone was kind, made me feel comfortable and patient with me. I haven't had the best experiences at dentist but Dr. Szef was amazing at easing my fears and concerns. She took the time to educate me about my care needs and showed completely and that's why I would recommend them to anyone. The whole staff is top Tier.

Wonderful experience. I have a phobia of dentists and everyone went above and beyond to treat my tooth issue *and* make me feel seen, valued, and safe. Sherri especially made me feel like I was at the dentist with a friend; definitely did not feel like a number. Thank you, Sherri! 💗

I was a first time patient, and if I could give Simply Smiles more than 5 stars, I would. I will definitely be back 😊 The staff was all amazing!! They were very informative and very thorough. I absolutely LOVED Hannah as my hygienist as well. Her bubbly personality made my day joyful and she makes you feel very comfortable through the entire process. Keep her! I’ve went to other practices to know she really goes above and beyond. Dr. Sandra Scef was very sweet and really cared for me as well, and at the end of the day, that’s what matters and stands out.

I have extreme dental anxiety and I can't say enough how helpful, friendly, and amazing this entire staff has been to me so far. I had a deep clean this morning with Yaquelin Piloto and she was so informed, reassuring, and gentle and put me at ease for my first cleaning in years. My teeth look and feel wonderful!!!

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I have an exam and cleaning?

Many patients do well with a visit every six months. Your dentist may suggest a different schedule based on your gums, your cavity risk and your health history.

What does the $130 new patient special include?

It includes an exam, full-mouth X-rays and a cleaning for new patients. The cleaning portion applies in the absence of periodontal disease. If we find gum disease, we will explain your options first.

Does a cleaning hurt?

A routine cleaning on healthy gums should not be painful. If your gums are tender or it has been a while, tell your hygienist so we can go slowly and give you breaks.

What is the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?

A regular cleaning removes buildup and stains above the gumline. A deep cleaning also clears bacteria and tartar from below the gumline and is recommended when gum disease is present.

Do I need X-rays every time?

Not always. Your dentist decides which X-rays are useful based on your history and what the exam shows.

How long does the visit take?

The exam itself usually takes about 30 minutes. Plan for extra time if you are also having a cleaning or it is your first visit with us.
